How Acupuncture Treatment ensures complete physical and mental well being?

If you read health-related news, you most likely know that Acupuncture is a popular natural, complementary therapy for various ailments. The Department of Essential Drugs and Medicine Policy of the World Health Organization (WHO) listed various ailments and symptoms acupuncture treatment can help.  They include rheumatoid arthritis, headaches, depression, sprains, chronic pain, strokes, sciatica and more. Recent research conducted at New York-Presbyterian Hospital / Columbia University Medical Center showed that acupuncture can relieve the joint pain of cancer patients going through hormone therapies. It is also effective in relieving the nausea that often comes from chemotherapy.

An acupuncture treatment consists of “needling” or the process during which a very thin needle is inserted into a patient’s acupoint. The acupoint within which the needle is inserted depends on the ailment the practitioner is treating. There are approximately 2,000 acupoints in the body, therefore it is crucial that you receive your treatment by an experienced, licensed acupuncturist (L.Ac.). “Needling” is done for the purpose of restoring one’s balance of energy, or qi. It may take one or several treatments.

Similar to other modalities of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), acupuncturists are taught to determine the root cause of the problem. In some instances, the patient may require other therapies in addition to acupuncture, at which point the acupuncturist would refer other practitioners. Some of the therapies may include nutrition, Yoga, massage therapy and more. By taking a holistic approach to treating their ailment, the patient can restore and maintain their physical, mental and emotional health.

Due to the growth of natural holistic therapies such as acupuncture throughout the United States, there are many opportunities for licensed acupuncturists to enjoy a gainful career. Depending on one’s goals and determination, a licensed Acupuncturist can enjoy a rewarding career helping others. The first step to becoming a successful practitioner is to choose a quality education at an accredited school. The Graduate School of Oriental Medicine at New York College features a 145-credit, nine-trimester Acupuncture Program that requires participating students to complete their practical training at their clinics where patients receive their acupuncture treatment from student interns supervised by licensed practitioners at a discounted rate. New York College is an ACAOM-accredited institution with four locations across the New York metro area.
